Seasonal Vegetables – Broccoli

Frozen Broccoli
Needs an acceptable kosher symbol, unless it is used in a
completely liquified smoothie.

Fresh Broccoli
Fresh Broccoli is known to be highly infested and requires very thorough washing and checking.

FILL UP a basin with hot water (as hot as your hands can withstand) from the tap. Mix well with either Veggie Wash or liquid soap.
SEPARATE the broccoli stems into small florets (the size you would find in a typical bag of frozen broccoli). Soak  the broccoli for 15 minutes in the soapy water. While it is soaking, use your hands to gently open the florets one at a time allowing the water to penetrate.
REMOVE the broccoli from the water and rinse well under streaming tap water.
FILL UP a basin with hot water (as hot as your hands can tolerate) from the tap, without soap.
SOAK the broccoli for 5 minutes. During this time, gently open the florets again.
REMOVE the broccoli in small handfuls and vigorously shake them over the mesh cloth so the water from the broccoli will fall on the cloth.
POUR the water from the basin through the cloth and check the cloth.
IF INSECTS ARE FOUND, repeat the process until the cloth is insect-free. If, after checking the third time, there are still insects, the broccoli should not be used.
