Rabbi Levy Honored
12/19/04 - An honorable evening!
When Rabbi Don Yoel Levy, Administrator of OK Kosher Certification, is honored, it is no simple matter.
The occasion was the 1st Annual Dinner of Yeshiva Chovivei Torah of Brooklyn, NY. Rabbi Levy has long been an active supporter of the Yeshiva, in both the foreground and the background, and in the interest of helping the Yeshiva further he agreed to accept the honor.
Many OK-Certified companies clamored to place ads honoring Rabbi Levy and sent representatives to the dinner. In a video compiled for the evening, leading Rabbis lined up to extol this great kosher visionary, repeatedly mentioning Rabbi Levy’s unshakable principles.
But perhaps most heartwarming were the words of Israel’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yona Metzger, who flew from Israel especially to honor Rabbi Levy. The Chief Rabbi described Rabbi Levy in the seven years following his marriage, studying in Israel assiduously and without distraction, determined to join the rabbinate. “I imagine,” said Rabbi Metzger, “that had he continued on this path, he would today be the Chief Rabbi of Israel!”
But Rabbi Levy’s father, Rabbi Berel Levy, summoned him back to New York to help with the expanding operations of OK Kosher Certification, and out of respect for his father, and at the repeated insistence of the Lubavitcher Rebbe OBM, Rabbi Levy agreed to enter the field of kosher. The result of Rabbi Levy’s dedication to kosher supervision have been equally significant, as testified to by Rabbi Metzger, who pointed out plainly, “when a kosher certificate arrives in our offices bearing the signature of Rabbi Levy, we accept it without a second thought.”
